This policy explains what personal information nowamajormotionpodcast.com collects, why, who it is shared with and the choices you have. We keep it short and plain: we only collect what we need to run the site, answer you and send the things you ask for. We don’t sell your information and we don’t run advertising or tracking of our own.
Who we are
This website is run by Plexus Media for the Now a Major Motion Podcast. Plexus Media is the “controller” of your personal data under UK data protection law (the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018).
For any privacy question or request, email jamie@plexusmedia.co.uk.
What we collect and why
When you use one of our forms
Our Suggest a book form asks for your name, email address, the book (and, if you like, the film) and why you’re suggesting it. The feedback form under each episode asks for your name, email address, an optional website, a subject and your message. With each submission we also record your IP address and basic browser and device details, which help us spot spam and abuse.
We use this to read and consider your suggestion or feedback and, where needed, reply to you. Feedback is emailed to the show’s hosts and editors. Our lawful basis is our legitimate interests in running the show and responding to listeners. We keep form entries for up to 12 months and then delete them, unless an ongoing conversation means we need them for longer.
To keep spam out, the forms use Google reCAPTCHA, which checks that a real person is filling them in. To do that, Google receives information such as your IP address, browser details and how you interact with the page, and may set cookies on google.com. Google’s use of this is covered by its Privacy Policy and Terms. Our lawful basis is our legitimate interest in protecting the site from spam and abuse.
When you listen to an episode
Episodes are streamed from our podcast host, Buzzsprout. When you press play, your browser fetches the audio from Buzzsprout, which receives your IP address and browser details and uses them to deliver the audio and produce anonymous listening statistics. See Buzzsprout’s privacy policy. Our site also keeps simple play counts for each episode; these are totals and are not linked to you.
If you allow it, the player stores a small cookie so it can pick up where you left off (see Cookies).
When you watch a trailer
Film trailers are hosted on YouTube (Google). Our pages only show a picture of the trailer; nothing is loaded from YouTube until you choose to play one and allow YouTube’s cookies. When a trailer plays, YouTube receives your IP address and device information and stores its own cookies and similar data, which Google uses to run the player, count views and for its own advertising and personalisation. We use YouTube’s “privacy-enhanced” mode. Our lawful basis is your consent, which you can withdraw at any time from “Cookie settings”. See Google’s Privacy Policy.
If you turn on episode alerts
If you choose to get alerts when new episodes come out, your browser gives us a unique subscription address at its push service (run by Google, Apple, Mozilla or Microsoft depending on your browser) and a pair of encryption keys. We store these, together with your browser’s user-agent string, only so we can send you alerts. The alerts themselves are encrypted so the push service can’t read them. When an alert is shown, clicked or dismissed, your browser tells us so we can count how alerts perform; these counts are not linked to you. Links in alerts carry campaign tags (for example utm_source=browser-push) so we can count visits that came from an alert.
Our lawful basis is your consent. You can turn alerts off at any time from “Episode alerts” at the foot of any page or in your browser’s settings, and we delete your subscription straight away. Subscriptions that a push service tells us have expired are deleted automatically.
Every time you visit
Like every website, our servers receive your IP address, browser details and the pages you request. This is handled by our web hosting provider and by Cloudflare, which sits in front of the site to deliver it quickly and protect it from attacks; Cloudflare may set a short-lived security cookie. This information is used only to deliver and secure the site and is kept for a limited period in server logs. Our lawful basis is our legitimate interest in running a secure website.
Some of the site’s fonts are loaded from Google Fonts, so your browser contacts Google’s servers, which receive your IP address. Google says it does not use this to build profiles of visitors.
To understand how the site is used we run Independent Analytics, which works entirely on our own web server: nothing is sent to an outside analytics company. It does not use cookies and does not store your IP address. Instead it records the pages viewed, the page or campaign link you arrived from, your approximate location (country and city), your device and browser type, and clicks on some buttons (for example your cookie choice), linked only by an anonymised code made from your IP address and browser details mixed with a secret value. Our lawful basis is our legitimate interest in understanding which episodes and pages people find useful. We don’t use any advertising cookies.
Cookies and similar storage
We ask before setting any cookie that isn’t strictly necessary, and we respect the Global Privacy Control signal: if your browser sends it, optional cookies stay off unless you switch them on yourself. You can change your choices at any time with Cookie settings at the foot of every page.
If you withdraw consent for YouTube, we stop loading trailers, but cookies YouTube has already stored stay in your browser until they expire or you clear them in your browser settings.
Our record of your choice. The law requires us to be able to show that you agreed to optional cookies, so each time you make or change a cookie choice we keep a record of it: the date and time, what you chose, whether your browser sent Global Privacy Control, the page you were on, your browser type, the random reference stored in your cookie, the version of this policy, and your IP address with the last part removed (for example 81.2.69.0), so it points to a network area rather than your device. Our lawful basis is our legal obligation to demonstrate consent. These records are deleted automatically after 12 months. Choices are also counted in our analytics as anonymous totals.
Who we share information with
We only share personal information with services that help us run the site, and only as described above:
- our web hosting provider, Cloudflare (site delivery and security) and our email delivery provider (sending form notifications);
- ManageWP (GoDaddy), which we use for site maintenance and backups – backups include the website’s database, so they can contain form entries and alert subscriptions;
- Google (reCAPTCHA, YouTube trailers if you allow them, and Google Fonts);
- Buzzsprout (podcast audio);
- browser push services (Google, Apple, Mozilla or Microsoft), if you turn on alerts.
We may also disclose information if the law requires it. Links on the site to other websites (for example Amazon, IMDb or podcast apps) take you to services with their own privacy policies.
International transfers
Some of these providers, such as Google, Cloudflare and Buzzsprout, are based in or process data in the United States or elsewhere outside the UK. Where that happens, the transfer is protected by the UK–US data bridge (for certified companies) or by the UK’s approved contract terms (the International Data Transfer Agreement or Addendum).
How long we keep information
- Form entries: up to 12 months.
- Records of cookie choices: 12 months, then deleted automatically.
- Analytics records: these don’t contain your IP address; we keep them to compare how the site is used over time.
- Episode-alert subscriptions: until you turn alerts off or the subscription expires.
- Cookies: as listed in the table above.
- Server and security logs: a limited period set by our hosting and security providers.
- Backups: overwritten on a rolling basis.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you have the right to ask for a copy of your personal data, to have it corrected or deleted, to restrict or object to how we use it, and to receive it in a portable format. Where we rely on your consent, you can withdraw it at any time. To use any of these rights, email jamie@plexusmedia.co.uk. We’ll respond within one month.
If you’re unhappy with how we’ve handled your information, please tell us first so we can put it right. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113.
Children
The site is not aimed at children under 13 and we don’t knowingly collect their personal information. If you think a child has sent us their details, please get in touch and we’ll delete them.
Changes to this policy
We’ll update this page if what we collect or how we use it changes, and change the date at the top. If a change is significant we’ll make it clear on the site.
